On the morning of August 5 at Dongfanghong LNG fuelling station in Wuhan’s Dongxihu District, heat ripples rise visibly from the sun-baked concrete pavement.

I put on the workers’ so-called armor: a flame-resistant long-sleeved jacket, an insulated apron, a safety helmet, and thick elbow-length gloves. Less than five minutes after stepping into the operation zone, sweat soaked my undershirt. My hair, trapped beneath the helmet, felt as though it had been drenched in water. My breathing grew laboured, my temples throbbed, and for a moment my vision dimmed. A few steps away, the on-duty worker carried out procedures deftly. Asked if the heat bothered him, he grinned behind his face shield: “We work at least eight hours daily — we’ve long grown accustomed to it. The equipment cannot shut down, trucks cannot wait, and we cannot step back.”

Between Fire and Ice

Liu Tao, 40, works at the Dongfanghong station. Heavyset and famously heat-intolerant, he's soaked through his gear within minutes of stepping outside. Today’s assignment requires him to stay in the offloading zone for three to four hours conducting simultaneous offloading and fuelling: LNG tankers transfer cryogenic fuel into station storage tanks while dispensers fill heavy-duty trucks, and neither stream of work can pause.

The LNG nozzle runs at -150°C. The ground beneath it can exceed 50°C. That 200°C swing means Liu's gloves frost over each time he connects or disconnects a nozzle, even as the sun bakes the back of his neck. “Thick gloves, leather apron, face shield — none of it's optional,” he pats on his protective gear. “Safety comes before comfort.”

Station manager Wang Tianhu keeps his eyes fixed on the pressure gauge nearby. He knows exactly what's at stake: the half-trailer fleets running the Dongxihu logistics park depend entirely on this station. Truck operators follow a schedule totally different from private motorists: they load cargo overnight and hit the road at dawn, or finish loading at noon and rush straight here to refuel.

“A full tank on these rigs gets them over a thousand kilometers down the road,” he says. “We can't afford delays.”

“The Trucks Can't Wait, and We Won't Back Down”

By 11 a.m., the concrete at the Dongxihu Hydrogen Refueling Station on Gexin Avenue was hot enough to fry an egg. Station manager Gao Hu stood beneath the canopy, watching a line of trucks stretch out — license plates from Hubei, Anhui, Henan, Shanghai, drivers from across central and eastern China. National subsidies have cut hydrogen prices from 35 yuan to 20 yuan per kilogram, and with highway tolls waived for hydrogen trucks, drivers now detour here whenever they pass through Hubei.

Veteran operator Wang Cheng remembers clearly how quiet the station used to be in the afternoons three years ago. Now the hydrogen dispenser runs nonstop from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Filling a heavy truck with 50 kilograms of hydrogen takes nearly an hour. For the whole duration, he must hold the nozzle, monitor gauges and never leave the post. His blue anti-static flame-resistant uniform is far thicker than ordinary garments. He drinks four litres of water every single day, all lost through perspiration. “My uniform alternates between soaked and dried. My wife says I’m covered in salt crust when I get home,” he jokes. Then he tightens his grip on the fuelling nozzle. “Working with high-pressure equipment leaves zero room for carelessness.”

Gao Hu knows better than anyone how temperamental the equipment can be. Wuhan operates only four publicly accessible hydrogen refueling stations, and his is the sole one in Dongxihu District. “If equipment malfunctions, all the trucks that come here for scheduled refueling will be stranded.” That explains his non-negotiable inspection routine: checks every two hours, even when temperatures hit 40°C. He carries a handheld detector to examine valves one by one, listening for abnormal noises, monitoring pressure readings and measuring temperatures, never letting his guard down for a single moment.

The trucks can't wait, and we won't back down. Liu Tao said it. Wang Cheng echoed it. So did Gao Hu.
