Amidst the lush mountains and pristine waters of northwestern Hubei, over ten thousand seasoned artisans in the rural Yunxi County are practicing a dynamic form of “alchemy”. Harnessing time-honored artistry and innovative insight, they transform sorghum stalks into handicrafts for the global market, extract valuable components from camellia in levels far surpassing international standards, and deliver local specialties to households nationwide via e-commerce. By turning humble crafts into gold, these artisans are transforming native resources into engines of rural revitalization and weaving a vibrant new chapter for the countryside.

“Craftsmen” turned “Rural Artisans”

“I used to be called ‘the broom weaver’, but now I’m an officially certified ‘Rural Artisan’!” The head of the Yunxi Hengda Broom Specialized Cooperative, Hu Chaozhu, beamed as he displayed the “Yunxi Certified Weaver” certificate bearing the official seals of Yunxi County Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and Bureau of Human Resources and Social Security.

Inside the cooperative, workers bind sorghum stalks, transforming them into artistic brooms and zodiac-themed ornaments. “A single piece sells for 88 yuan on e-commerce platforms—over a dozen times the price of an ordinary broom”, Hu introduced. What began as a local craft has grown into an industry with an annual output value reaching tens of millions of yuan, supporting stable incomes for 171 cooperative members and 63 employees with disabilities. The products are now exported to Europe and the United States.

With traditional crafts dying out and “brain drain” threatening rural talent, Yunxi County has pioneered a county-level certification system for its signature local artistry. This system established ten major titles, including “Qixi Craft Masters”, “Yunxi Weavers”, “Yunxi Construction Workers”, “Yunxi Fungi Technicians”, “Yunxi Tea Specialists”, “Yunxi Aquacultural Workers”, “Yunxi Livestock Handlers”, “Yunxi Carvers (and Metalworkers)”, “Yunxi Herbal Medicine Experts”, and “Yunxi Artisans”. The framework prioritizes workmanship over education background and emphasizes contribution rather than seniority, with core evaluation criteria focusing on “technical proficiency” and “capacity for wealth generation”. Certified artisans can receive a subsidy of 500 RMB and gain access to pathways for professional advancement, and those who with outstanding performances are eligible for intermediate and senior-level titles.

Currently, over 12,000 “local experts” and “field talents” are listed in the county’s database of rural artisans, with more than 2,000 key individuals undergoing specialized training. The official “titles” have bolstered camaraderie and creativity among local talents.

Technological Breakthroughs and the Renewal of Traditional Craftsmanship

In a laboratory at the Rural Craftsman Park in Yunxi County, “fungi expert” Mao Dejun is observing the mycelium in petri dishes. This is his “dreamland”—Shiyan City’s first rural “morel mushroom strain cultivation laboratory”. After thousands of failures, Mao finally developed high-yield, disease-resistant premium mushroom strains, solving the problem of “acclimatization” faced by strains from other regions. He was appointed as a provincial-level science and technology commissioner and led Changgangling Village to expand its morel mushroom cultivation to over 100 acres. Today, the mushrooms harvested by Yunxi farmers are processed into flavorful canned products and exported to Malaysia and South Korea. The “Taste of Yunxi” has thus made its way onto international tables.

In Luo Dehua’s studio, a city-level inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage “Luo’s Root Carving”, tree roots are imbued with soul and stories. One piece “Magpie Bridge Reunion” encapsulates Yunxi’s Qixi (Chinese Valentine’s Day) culture. Etched in another piece, “What is the Red Army”, are the memories of the Red Revolution. Meanwhile, other works like “Infinity” and “Seeking the Way” have been showcased at the International Copyright Expo, bringing Yunxi’s cultural identity to the global audience.

At Hubei Qixi Tea Industry Biotechnology Co., Ltd., “Yunxi tea artisans” Wang Huajian, Wang Yonggui, and others have merged traditional tea-making methods with modern biotechnology. After eight years of research and development, they developed an anaerobic fermentation technology, bringing γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentrations in “Qixi Tea” to levels far exceeding international standards. The product’s annual sales revenue has surpassed 100 million yuan, boosting the income of thousands of tea farming households.

From exporting root carving copyrights to transforming broom-making into a craft, and advancing tea production with technology, Yunxi’s rural artisans are continuously stretching the bounds and potential of traditional techniques, exploring paths for “living heritage” and sustainable development.

The “Yunxi Model” Revitalizes the Rural Industrial Ecosystem

Yunxi County has developed a localized model using its four-in-one cultivation approach: “policy support as the foundation, system evaluation to eliminate barriers, industry-talent collaborations to strengthen the chain, and innovation-driven value enhancement”. By establishing a closed-loop system involving “selection—cultivation—evaluation—incentives—management—industry integration”, the county has effectively solved the problem of “skills lost when people leave”.

Efforts to empower artisans are also now woven into the six major agricultural chains, including edible mushrooms, Matou goats, and tea. Local governments have further established a three-tier platform of “county-level artisan parks—workstations—studios”, fostering collaborative work among artisans. This “park-based model” has become both the “adhesive” for industry-talent integration and an “incubator” for innovation.

A Yunxi County official stated that nurturing talent through craftsmanship, leveraging talent to revitalize industries, and promoting shared prosperity through industries has become a clear path for advancing rural development. With feet anchored to this land and hands bearing its treasured heritage, Yunxi’s artisans are embracing a future gleaming with innovation
