“Mei Chaofeng,” a literary character famed for her lethal “Nine-Yin White Bone Claw” signature move, is seen fiercely kneading the dough. Standing beside her is “Ke Zhen’e,” a stern martial arts mentor who now wields the wok as a cook. Recently, videos posted by a martial arts-themed restaurant in Xiangyang, Hubei, have gained traction online. The viral eatery has seen diners flocking there, drawn by its fully immersive experience of “Jianghu,” the beloved fictional universe in the wuxia (martial arts) genre.

At around 7 p.m. on October 26, as night fell, the martial arts-themed restaurant buzzed with customers. Stepping inside, one is teleported to a quintessential ancient Chinese garden, designed with elements of a Jiangnan garden—pavilions, terraces, and gurgling streams creating a pleasant ambience. In the performance area, three characters from Jin Yong’s legendary novel The Legend of the Condor Heroes—Guo Jing, Huang Rong and Mei Chaofeng—are staging a gripping martial arts show.
It is reported that the restaurant hosts a 90-minute immersive performance at 6:30 p.m. every evening. Characters from Jin Yong’s martial arts novels, such as Ke Zhen’e, Mei Chaofeng, Huang Rong and Xiangyang’s historical legends like Zhuge Liang, make a surprise appearance, offering the audience a timeless experience.
“We invited the performing troupe featuring the ‘Seven Freaks of the South of the Yangtze River’ to attract more visitors to experience Xiangyang’s culture, delicacies, and scenery,” said the restaurant manager. Since its opening on September 21, 2025, the restaurant has been in operation for just over a month. In addition to live performances, short video clips of “Mei Chaofeng Kneading Dough” and “Ke Zhen’e Cooking” have been recorded and shared on social media platforms, drawing wide attention.
Performers occasionally walk throughout the courtyard to interact with diners. One restaurant-goer spotted an actor roleplaying as “Ke Zhen’e”, a character depicted as blind in the novel, scrolling through his phone in the corridor. The actor slowly turned, leaning on his demon-subduing staff, and with his eyes tightly closed, he delivered the line with utter seriousness: “Follow my lead!” The striking contrast between his demeanor and words drew hearty laughter from all present.
Each evening at 8 o’clock, the performances come to a temporary halt. Yet, the lanterns glow undimmed, the “Jianghu” ambience clearly lingering on. By weaving Wuxia elements into the local cultural fabric, the restaurant is gradually emerging as a key attraction driving Xiangyang’s nighttime tourism growth.
