“At five in the early dawn, across the tea-cloaked hills, the stooped figures of tea farmers undulate in the dawn light. Beneath the fluttering fingertips of tea pickers lies the livelihood and expectation of their entire families. We take up their hopes, and transform each fresh leaf into hope.” Such were the words written by “Sister Vine Tea” Yang Yiqiong in a recent post on her WeChat.

Yang Yiqiong’s WeChat feed reads like a diary on tea cultivation: documenting the labor behind sowing and harvesting, promoting the benefits of vine tea, and sharing experiences from tea exhibitions... Over the past eight years, this former business tycoon has left the neon-lit city to settle deep in the rugged mountains of western Hubei—the Laifeng County, Enshi Prefecture. Believing firmly that women are no less capable than men, she has actively expanded markets, strived to build her own brand, and turned the traditional Tujia vine tea into a lucrative industry, leading fellow villagers down a path of increased income and wealth.

Yang Yiqiong, 58 this year, is a native of Huangmaoping Village, Xiangfeng Town, Laifeng County, Enshi Prefecture, Hubei Province. She is affectionately called “Sister Vine Tea” by the villagers.

In the 1990s, Yang Yiqiong was engaged in pig breeding and sales. Not only did she raise pigs herself, but she also purchased free-range pigs from rural areas such as Hubei, Hunan, Chongqing to sell nationwide. After 2000, she switched to small commodity sales, opening more than 10 chain stores, with her business thriving across Hubei, Hunan and Chongqing.

During a trip back to her hometown in 2016, Yang Yiqiong happened to learn that the local vine tea products were of good quality, yet they faced poor sales, leaving growers at their wits’ end. Without market expansion, this promising industry faced decline. “I thought at the time, having owned businesses away from home over the  years, I had accumulated some resources. If I could develop agriculture in my hometown, it would not only bring my own advantages into play but also help villagers increase their income.” Yang Yiqiong told reporters on July 28th.

Driven by a deep affection for her hometown and a strong determination to revitalize local industries, Yang Yiqiong made the daring decision to return to her village and launch her business. She even persuaded her son, who had been working in international trade, and her daughter, who was building a career in education, to return home. Together, the family embarked on their “second entrepreneurial journey” right at their doorstep.

In 2018, Yang Yiqiong founded the Sanhe Professional Cooperative and registered Hubei Youfenglai Selenium-Enriched Eco-Agriculture Technology Co., Ltd., marking her official transition from “businesswoman” to a “new farmer”, fully embracing the rural lifestyle. That same year, the cooperative leased approximately 1,000 mu of tea plantations in several townships across Laifeng County, including Baifusi and Geleche, and established a processing plant for vine tea. By the end of 2019, the company’s vine tea sales revenue had exceeded 5 million yuan.

She would rather earn less than abandon her commitment to organic farming

“Right now, picking ‘dragon whisker’ tea earns me over 200 yuan a day,” said 75-year-old Wu Lanying, as she skillfully plucked tea leaves at the vine tea field in Sangshuping Village, Geleche Township.

There are many villagers like Wu Lanying who have seen their incomes grow thanks to vine tea at Yang Yiqiong’s base. At present, her vine tea plantation has expanded to over 6,000 mu, including 899 mu of tea gardens certified as organic and 380 mu certified as green production bases.

“Customers are extremely eager to place orders, but we’d rather earn less than outsource tea leaves,” said Yang Yiqiong as she lightly brushed the fresh buds on a tea branch. “Every single tea leaf here must be planted and picked by our own hands. No matter how high the cost, we won’t cut corners. Quality is our greatest confidence.”

Yang Yiqiong’s confidence comes from strict organic cultivation. “We never use pesticides or chemical fertilizers in our tea gardens—not even cars are allowed in,” she said proudly, gazing at the thriving vine tea plantation. “My goal is simple: to let consumers enjoy authentic Tujia vine tea.”

This rigorous dedication to craftsmanship has enabled Yang Yiqiong’s vine tea to meet the standards of intangible cultural heritage processing and pass authoritative quality certifications. With its high flavonoid content and notable health benefits, the tea has earned a strong reputation and become a benchmark in the industry. In 2019, at the 16th Wuhan Agricultural Expo, her company’s “Mountain Forager” vine tea product was honored with the title “Gold Medal Agricultural Product.”

“From Wuhan to Shanghai to Beijing, orders are pouring in from across China. We can sell every batch we produce; market demand is no concern at all,” Yang Yiqiong said. Harvested from high-altitude plantations, the vine tea shoots undergo artisanal processes like fixation and roasting to become premium Tujia vine tea, a fragrant herbal infusion prized for its heat-clearing and detoxifying properties.

Expanding sales channels through online platforms,The fragrance of Tujia vine tea spreads far and wide

When e-commerce began transforming agricultural sales, Yang spotted the opportunity early.

In 2019, she enrolled in a local government-sponsored digital marketing program and immersed herself in mastering short video creation techniques day and night, later producing nearly 600 promotional videos within a year. Several went viral with 100,000+ views, earning her the nickname “Sister Vine Tea”, and opening new distribution channels.

In 2024, with support from Enshi Prefecture and Women’s Federations of Laifeng County, Yang introduced her products at Hong Kong-Macao Precision Matching Activities, which were well received by consumers. The breakthrough came at June’s 3rd Hometown Bazaar Carnival in Hong Kong, where her Victoria Harbour pop-up featuring tea tastings and wellness lectures shared knowledge with over 700 residents about the benefits of vine tea, generating HK$26,000 in on-site sales.

“Any exhibition that boosts Laifeng vine tea’s visibility is worth attending,” Yang said. Over the past eight years, she has traveled far and wide with her products, participating in more than 100 promotional exhibitions and hosting over 30 vine tea tasting events, steadily elevating this regional specialty to national prominence.

Beyond traditional vine tea products, Yang’s innovation extends to vine tea-based sprays and shampoos, diversifying the product line despite agriculture’s high-risk nature. “Investments surge like tides while returns trickle in,” she admits, “but I owe this commitment to my community.”

Now, Yang’s pioneering agritourism through an educational tea plantation, blending cultural heritage with experiential travel. She aims to let more people know about Laifeng’s vine tea. “I sincerely hope that the vine tea can go further, so that the whole world can taste this natural gift from the Wuling Mountains,” Yang said.
