For many college graduates, embarking on a spontaneous trip upon graduation is top choice. Yet, imagine taking on a 2000-kilometer bikepacking trip to Lhasa as someone with minimal cycling experience? At 10 p.m. on June 25, 23-year-old Yang Zhi couldn’t contain his joy as he cycled past the Potala Palace, screaming: “The dream I had at 17 has finally become reality in the year of my college graduation! Twenty-two days of persistence and effort has finally paid off!”
Dreamed of Cycling the Sichuan-Tibet Line Since High School
Yang Zhi is a graduate of the School of Journalism at Hubei University, hailing from Zhushan County, Hubei Province. Being a fitness enthusiastwho often works out, plays basketball, and soccer with friends, he was relatively new to cycling. This May, after sitting the provincial civil service exam to serve in the Zhuxi County Public Security Bureau, his long-standing dream since high school of "cycling the Sichuan-Tibet Route" began to resurface.
On May 20, after consulting a friend passionate about cycling, Yang Zhi ordered a bicycle online. As soon as the bike arrived, he invited his friend on a 30-kilometer test ride. “At the time, my leg muscles were so sore, but I was set on biking to Lhasa. My friend was moved by my persistence and decided to join me,” Yang Zhi said with a chuckle.
After mapping their route out and making final preparations—from stocking up on food to reinforcing the bike frames and preparing repair kits—the two took a high-speed train to Chengdu with their bikes and luggage on May 31st. Following a two day-stop in Chengdu, on June 3rd, they officially set offfor Lhasa, their dream destination.

National Highway 318’s Sichuan-Tibet section, dubbed “China’s Most Beautiful Scenic Highway”, boasts magnificent landscapes along the way, including snow-capped mountains, primeval forests, grasslands, glaciers, canyons, and major rivers. However, with 12 towering mountains at an altitude of over 4,000 meters flaking the route, the ride is nothing short of a nighmarefor cyclists, especially those without experience.

During the 22-day cycling journey, Yang Zhi primarily cycled alongside a friends, though there were days he rode alone. Lacking in experience, he once found himself still on the road past 9 p.m. Further worsening the situation was the poor road condition, and potential sightings of bears and wolf packs nearby. “I was genuinely terrified at that time. Fortunately, through the final 10 kilometer stretch of the day, a Tibetan driver offered me a ride to town,” Yang Zhi recalled.
Another time, after descending Dongda Mountain—the highest point on the Sichuan-Tibet Route—Yang Zhi experienced severe altitude sickness forcing him to rest by the roadside. It was then that Tibetan locals brought him butter tea and glucose, and he gradually recovered. Later, when his bike broke down mid-ride, locals also stepped in to help. “The Tibetan people are all kind. They’ve given me so much help along the way, and their warmth has touched me deeply. I’ll keep it in my heart forever,” Yang Zhi said.

The 22-day, 2,160-kilometer cycling fit presented far more difficulties: sunburned skin, harsh weather, and arduous roads were all part of the challenge. Along the way, Yang Zhi saw many fellow riders give up opting to hitch a ride to their destination. However, he still persisted in cycling up the mountains—even resorting to haul his bike uphill when he could not ride.

Despite the countless expected and unexpected hardships, the unrivaled scenery along the way, help from Tibetan compatriots, camaraderie from fellow cyclists, and mental clarity have all left a lifelong impact on Yang Zhi: “Before setting out, I’d had some personal issues, but this bikepacking trip has completely healed me.”
Having never been to Tibet before, Yang Zhi understanding of the area was informed by textbooks and online media—a region characterized by inconvenient transportation and an underdeveloped economy. Through his 22-day cycling journey and personal experience, he came to a realization: “Nestled within these Ne countless mountains and rivers, is the dedication of countless builders gave their youth and even lives to forging transport links between Tibet and the rest of China. I’m truly inspired by their perseverance.”
On the afternoon of June 29, Yang Zhi reported for duty at the Zhuxi County Public Security Bureau in Hubei Province as a probationary police officer and has begun pre-service training. He explained, the trip taught him the value of perseverance, a quality he will carry into his new career. Reflecting on the determination he used to conquer 12 mountains over 4,000 meters high on the Sichuan-Tibet Route, he will now devote that same drive to continuously improve his skills, work to become a qualified police officer who will serve his community and the people.
