“Any new books today?” At 9 a.m. sharp, as the Foreign Languages Bookstore on Zhongnan Road in Wuchang District, Wuhan opens, one familiar face always stands out among the early visitors—84-year-old Li Yanhua. Grandama Li, a devoted regular, is a familiar figure to the staff. They all know her passion: poring over math books and solving problems. In fact, she’s often the first to dive into newly arrived math titles.

Math Books are Her Favorite

On the morning of June 11, Grandma Li wheeled her small cart briskly to the second floor. After scanning the shelves, she pulled out a copy of Math Score-Boosting Notes, settled at an empty desk, and retrieved a notebook and pen from her cart—ready to jot down insights as she read.

Li Tongfei, the bookstore manager, greeted Grandma Li warmly and reminded her to watch her step.

Beside the mathematics book section on the second floor of the bookstore, at its usual spot against the wall, lie the old lady's "equipment": reading glasses with polished edges, a yellowed scratch pad, and a collection of past math papers.

Grandma Li was a math teacher at a junior high school in Hunan. After retiring in 2000, she came to Wuhan to live with her daughter and help take care of the children. In her spare time, the elderly lady loves reading, and the cabinets big and small in her home are filled with all kinds of books, but Grandma Li loves math books the most.

"I taught math all my life and am only interested in math," Grandma Li told the reporter. Whenever she has time, she often visits nearby bookstores to read. During the Spring Festival last year, she first visited the Foreign Languages Bookstore on Zhongnan Road in Wuchang, discovered that the environment here was excellent and the selection of math books was extensive, so she started coming here to read every day.

"The environment is very quiet, and the books are updated quickly, so I became a regular customer," Grandma Li said with a smile. Getting from home to the bookstore requires taking a bus and then the subway, a journey that takes about an hour, but she enjoys every minute of it. "It both allows me to learn and helps prevent dementia. You live and learn into old age!" Grandma Li said. She insists on her daily morning "ritual" here, while reading at home in the afternoons, and sometimes she also practices math problems online.

Though her hair has long been gray and she underwent surgery a few years ago, Grandma Li is in excellent spirits and walks with a vigor that belies her octogenarian age. Many readers who know her say she truly is a role model for lifelong learning.

Reading at the Bookstore on New Year's Eve

What impressed Li Tongfei most was this year's New Year’s Eve. When few readers were in the store yet the elderly woman still came to work on math problems. “She said she wanted to solve a challenging math problem before the New Year. We were deeply moved,” Li recalled. The bookstore is often full of children coming to read, and gradually everyone learnes that Grandma Li is a retired math teacher who is always willing to help them with homework. Naturally, the children grow fond of seeking her assistance.

Years of reading books and solving math problems on the desk have influenced the elderly woman’s eyesight. But she confesses, “I feel unsettled if I don't spend at least a few hours reading every day.” Even when on a bus or subway, she either works on math problems via her smartphone or exchanges academic insights with her former colleagues.

This state of “with no view to the Self” in learning has brought Grandma Li not only intellectual enrichment but also profound spiritual fulfillment.

Last year, while working on a math paper of the past national college entrance examination the bookstore, Grandma Li found that she could solve a problem in the math paper only using middle school knowledge. This flash of insight finally was integrated in her thesis, which was published in the journey of The Primary and Secondary Mathematics.

Grandma Li presented her results to reporters - her notebook was filled with notes.

Li Tongfei said that the bookstore warmly welcomes senior citizens to visit. “Her passion and state to learning is truly inspiring. She brings forward perseverance to everyone who notices her. Though time goes by, her thirst for knowledge remains young forever.”
