Community 126 of Gangdu Huayuan Street, Qingshan District, Wuhan City, is home to a neighborhood favorite barber: Qin Chushun. For the past 20 years, he has steadfastly provided complimentary haircuts for elderly residents in the neighborhood. His warm services and adept techniques have earned him widespread recognition. Spanning two decades, he has given over 10,000 free trims, fostering a deep sense of community and love in his neighborhood. A Jimu News reporter met Qin Chushun at one of his pop-up salons on May 30, where he was giving the seniors of the Yangtze River Kangyang Elderly Care Center a cut, armed with merely a stool, a few clippers, and some yellowing combs.
Qin Chushun’s introduction to hairdressing dates back to the 1980s. While working at the WISCO Sintering Plant, Qin bought a pair of scissors from a beauty salon market on Qianjin Fourth Road in Hankou to trim the hair of his elderly family members. Gradually, neighbors began reaching out to him for haircuts as well. “Practice makes perfect—that’s how I gained experience,” Qin told the reporter. He recalled how his hands trembled during his first haircutting session, which took an hour, but over time, his skills improved.
Qin Chushun has honed his craft through years of practice, with his haircutting techniques now near impeccable. His tools have evolved from basic haircutting scissors to manual hair clippers and now electric clippers. Now decades into volunteering, his kit is fully equipped with all his go-to tools.
The community approached Qin Chushun due to his extensive hairstyling experience, inviting him to join their volunteer team upon his retirement in 2005. Qin agreed immediately, saying, “I don’t have other special skills, but I can definitely cut hair.”
Whether it’s a buzz cut, short crop, or a styled trim, Qin always tailors each haircut to the elderly client’s preferences. “A great haircut can boost the confidence of the elderly,” he explains, “so I pour my heart into it.”
Li Laya is among his regular customers. When mentioning Qin, she was full of praise. “Qin’s skills are phenomenal—I always go to him when my hair grows out. He never charges a single dime, never seeks rewards, and never complains. His kindness touches us all deeply,” she says.
Residents in his community have done the math: each session takes about half an hour, and he serves more than ten people a day on average. Every haircut involves a series of movements from turning sideways to bending over, and squatting— holding the same posture for over ten minutes a challenging feat for the 75-year-old. “I never imagined that after retirement, I could give back to my community, it brings me so much joy” he said. To Qin, the trust people have placed in him, unwavering for decades, means more than anything else.
What few people know is that, besides offering free haircuts to residents, Qin also makes house calls to eight elderly residents in the community who are bedridden or immobile. These seniors find it extremely difficult to leave home for a haircut. “Qin’s home-visits have been a game changer for me. I’m deeply grateful to him—he’s truly a wonderful person,” said 75-year-old Li Qing’er. Paralyzed and confined to bed for years, she said it was Qin Chushun who helped her regain a sense of dignity, allowing her to face the world with a clean and refreshed look.
Throughout the years, whenever someone is in need, Qin has consistently lent a helping hand. Home-visits and hairdressing appointments have become a routine part of his life. Over the past 20 years, he has worn out more than a dozen clippers. “As long as I can, I’ll keep cutting hair,” he said. “Look for Qin when you need a trim” is now a catchphrase of Community 126. His presence and acts of altruism have become a beacon of love and positivity throughout the neighborhood.
