On April 17, a 68-year-old man fell into the Yangtze River near Shengyuan Port in Wuhan’s Yangtze River New Area and drifted over 1,000 meters downstream. He was eventually rescued by two quick thinking dockworkers who caught up to him following a 100-meter pursuit in a speedboat and pulled him to safety.

The incident unfolded around 7:00 a.m. along the Yangluo stretch of the Yangtze River. Yu Tao and Qin Shuanglin, employees of Wuhan Shengyuan Port Ship Service Co., Ltd., were working on a pontoon when they noticed a person floating in the water heading upstream. Initially dismissing the figure as a recreational swimmer, they grew concerned as the individual drifted closer. When the man approached within 25 meters of their vessel, the workers realized he was frantically waving for help, partially submerged in the river.

Suspecting he had likely accidently fallen into the river, the duo quickly relayed the situation to Luo Shenghua, the company’s supervisor, who issued the order to launch the rescue boat as soon as possible. The two then drove the Shengyuan Traffic lifeboat, equipped with lifebuoys and rescue poles, in pursuit of the endangered individual.

At that time, the victim, still clutching his bag, was struggling to stay afloat as he was getting swept by currents. Following a 100-meter chase in the speedboat, rescuers ultimately caught up with the man. In a joint effort, the rescue-duo cast a lifebuoy with ropes towards the man and pulled him to safety.

Only after further inquiry did the rescuers learn that the rescued Mr. Jiang was 68 years old and had been floating in the river for nearly two hours. Now aboard, the elderly Jiang shivered from his ordeal in the frigid Yangzte waters. The two workers were quick to action as they draped Mr. Jiang in winter gear and spread a blanket over the heated engine hood forming a makeshift heater to keep him warm.

Subsequently, the staff of the Urban Management Comprehensive Law Enforcement Bureau in the Yangtze River New Area and officers from the Changjiang Maritime Public Security Bureau soon arrived at the scene. The officers brought milk for Mr. Jiang and prepared a bowl of noodles to help him recuperate from the incident.

The elderly man recounted that he accidentally fell into the water by the riverbank, 200 meters downstream from the Yangluo Bridge. After nearly two grueling hours in the river and on the verge of exhaustion, the timely help of the dock workers was his only lifeline. At the time of his rescue, he was more than 1,000 meters away from the location where he fell into the water.
