From a piece of dough to an array of figurines, all it takes are the nifty hands of one sculptor. On January 3, a Wuhan-based dough sculpture artisan worked a small blob of dough pinching, rolling, pressing, kneading and carving it with a small bamboo knife before finally shaping it into petals as thin as cicada wings. It was not long before a lifelike pot of daffodils came to life.

Wuhan dough sculpture is an artform that use flour as its primary raw material which is then kneaded into figurines in all colors. Inspired by local folk elements, it reflects the figurative and realistic connotations, ensuring the figurines are real-to-life and rich in color, paying particular attention to details. Common themes in Wuhan dough sculptures include historical figures, myths and legends, opera stories, and folk customs.
Xu Yang, now 36 years old, is a representative inheritor of Wuhan dough art, an intangible cultural heritage item. Having studied painting and traditional arts since childhood, she graduated in 2011 with a degree in Visual Communication from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts. In addition to being an exceptionally talented Grade-One Arts and Crafts Designer, she is also a member of Wuhan Skill Master Association and Hubei Provincial Arts and Crafts Association.
Xu Yang has improved the production techniques of Wuhan dough sculptures by rolling the dough extremely thin, creating a dough as transparent and delicate as a cicada’s wing. This has opened a new realm for Wuhan dough sculptures, enabling the creation of intricate textures similar to fresh flower petals. To achieve this, she developed petal-shaped molds, an innovation that not only greatly enhances efficiency but also significantly reduces the production time of the cumbersome processes.
In the process of producing dough sculptures, the newly developed tools and molds have been effectively applied, further reducing production time. Meanwhile, by leveraging online shopping platforms, sales for Wuhan dough sculptures have surged, providing further opportunities for the exposure of traditional handicrafts.

Xu Yang not only actively carries out teaching and skill-sharing workshops in schools and communities, but also responds to the national call for ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage Meets the Campus’. She has been invited to numerous middle and primary schools in Wuhan to teach students how to make dough figurines, nurturing a new generation of enthusiasts and young inheritors. She hopes that through her efforts, more people will come to understand and appreciate dough sculptures, ensuring that this traditional craft is well-preserved and grows further in rural areas.
Xu Yang, aside from preserving the art of dough sculptures, is sparing no efforts in innovating and undertaking new initiatives. She has explored combining traditional Chinese dough sculpture with foreign sculpture art, creating artworks with a distinct style. In addition, she has incorporated fondant cake techniques, applying dough sculpting to broader fields, thus injecting new vitality into the development of this traditional craft.
