located in central China’s Yichang, Hubei province, a beef noodle shop named “Shanlinji” has captured the hearts of many. A red paper posted on its window offers those facing financial difficulties and unable to afford a meal a bowl of free beef noodles if they use a secret phrase.

This small noodle shop, run by a post-80s couple in their 40s, hopes to extend kindness and pass on the compassion the owners once experienced to others facing similar hardships.
A stone throw away from the CSCEC Star of Yichang residential community, “Shanlinji” Beef Noodle Shop is a modest establishment occupying less than 30 square meters. On November 25, a reporter from Jimu News visited the shop and noticed a conspicuous red notice on its window. The message read: “If you have fallen on hard times while in Yichang, please quietly tell our server, ‘Hello, one bowl of beef noodles without beef, please.’ Once you’re done, feel free to leave without hesitation.”
At midday, the small noodle shop was packed with customers, many of them workers from the nearby construction site. “One bowl per person, free noodle refills.” a poster on the wall read.
Chen Shanlin, the 41-year-old owner of the noodle shop, hails from a village in Jingzhou. Chen and his wife opened this noodle shop in April this year after working as a chef in Yichang for over a decade.
Chen told reporters that he started working even before he turned 20, and had too experienced hard times in his efforts to earn a living. When he finally had the means to open his own noodle shop, his immediate thought was to encourage those who were also struggling to make ends meet. By posting a “secret phrase” for help outside the shop, Chen’s wish was to provide a way for those in need to enjoy a free bowl of noodles without feeling embarrassed.
Chen had three employees to help out, while he was responsible for preparing the ingredients and delivering takeouts. Since the shop opened more than half a year ago, only six or seven customers have used the “secret phrase” to get a free bowl of noodles, according to the servers.

Xiong Dan, Chen's wife who comes from the same village as him, fully relates to her husband's sentiments. They worked together in the clothing industry in Fujian in their younger days, traveling far and wide for work and enduring many hardships. Chen once shared with Xiong a memorable experience which happened on the eve of the Spring Festival in 2004. On his way to visit a friend in Fujian, he had run out of money, with less than 100 yuan left in his bank account and was unable to withdraw it from the ATM. He had to walk for hours along the unfamiliar streets, hungry and exhausted, until he spotted a fast-food restaurant by the roadside.
Chen Shanlin, in a low voice, asked the restaurant owner for help: I have no money on me. I would like to eat a bowl of fried rice. To his surprise, the owner, without saying a word, served him a bowl of steaming egg fried rice.
“We’re all just trying to make a living, everyone goes through a rough patch. Things will get better with time.” These parting words from the restaurant owner left a mark on Chen Shanlin.
“It is because of hardships that we know the value of kindness.” While Xiong Dan feels sorry for her husband past struggles, she supports him more than ever.
One day, while Xiong Dan was serving food to customers, a seemingly hesitant middle-aged man approached the counter and whispered, “Please give me a bowl of beef noodles without the beef.” She was taken aback for a moment but eventually caught on and quickly served him a bowl of noodles. When the man attempted to eat the noodles outside the store, she followed behind and invited him to sit inside.
The couple came to Yichang in 2010 and struggled for years before opening “Shanlinji” noodle shop. Xiong Dan said, their family can now spend time together. With the future looking ever so bright, they hope to create a humble and joyful life through their hard work.
The couple shared plans to open a branch noodle shop. “We plan to continue passing on the kindness of a free bowl of noodles long term. Even though just few people need it, that's actually exactly what we hope for.” Chen Shanlin said.
