Each morning, one bus departs half an hour earlier, transforming into a “greengrocer’s line” that shuttles farmers heading to the city to sell their produce. The now dubbed “Express Bus for Farmers” is Wuhan’s local bus line J202.

A previous news article by Jimu News titled Wuhan has an “Express Bus for Vegetable Farmers”, received immediate online attention, prompting local outlets such as Xinhua News, China Daily and others to cover the story, which sparked much online discussion, was well received by netizens.

Online user “Jiang Jinfeng” and others commented: “Thumbs up to the Wuhan bus. Hard work is a badge of honor for us as Chinese people, and it does pay off. Such reports are really heart-warming.” “This is a win for both our transportation system and the farmers who are profiting from the set-up. It’s thanks to efficient governance that we are able to live so comfortably. What a great bus line!”

During the interview, some farmers also suggested that if the bus could make fewer some stops and depart earlier, they could commute faster, and the earlier they sold the produce, the sooner they could return home.

After a month, reporters learned from the J202 Bus operator Jiangxia Public Transport Co. of Wuhan Urban Development Group Co.Ltd that in response to the farmers’ suggestions and netizens’ requests, it introduced the J202 Bus “Express Bus for Vegetable Farmers” on September 6. By reducing the 60 stops along the route to 10, farmers can arrive in the city earlier and sell their produce at a good price.

How is the bus faring on its first day operating through the shortened route as an “Express Bus for Vegetable Farmers?” On the early morning of September 6th, a reporter arrived at the home of Luo Xuezhen, a vegetable farmer in Jiangxia District, Wuhan city, and followed along her journey to the city as a greengrocer. Their first stop was the vegetable field.

Bus services at dawn to transport farmers

At about 3:30 a.m. on September 6, the night was dark and all was quiet. In the tranquil fields, a chorus of chirping insects fills the air.

Luo Xuezhen, 63 years old, got up early in Minzhu Village, Wulongquan Street, Jiangxia District, Wuhan. After a simple wash, she took the vegetable basket, put on the headlamp, and went straight to her vegetable field.

“The recent high temperature has somewhat affected the growth of my vegetables. We did not pick any yesterday, so I should be able to harvest more to sell today,” Luo Xuezhen said. She cultivates about 0.8 acres of land, growing crops such as rice, sesame seeds, and vegetables. As her son and daughter are both married, only she and her husband live here, so she sells any surplus produce in the city.

The reporter followed Luo Xuezhen as she picked fresh vegetables in the field, the empty basket gradually filling up with sweet potato greens, sponge gourds, eggplants, okras, peppers, water spinach and other vegetables. Luo Xuezhen took out her phone, to find that two hours had passed. “Let’s head home to clean up the produce, and then we can catch the bus to the city,” she said.

On the winding ridge of the field, with the light of the headlamp, carrying a heavy vegetable basket, Luo Xuezhen strode back home and arrived at about 5:40 a.m.

With the clear and cool water from the backyard well, she quickly gave the freshly picked vegetables a thorough wash. The surface of the leaves was covered in glistening beads of water, appearing all the more tender.

Almost at the same time, the earliest J202 Bus at the Hezhan station parking lot in Jiangxia, was up and running at the crack of dawn 20 kilometers away from here. The bus runs half an hour earlier than the regular bus, with the first two shifts serving as a “greengrocers’ line” that picks up farmers along its route who are heading to the city to sell vegetables.

Luo Xuezhen told the reporter that in past times before the launching of this line, they either wholesaled vegetables to middlemen at a lower price, or hailed a taxi into the city along with several other villagers. “Now with the express bus, the fare is much cheaper than the taxi, and it is warm in winter and cool in summer. The driving is much more steadier too. After 2 years, I can apply for a Courtesy Card for Senior Citizens, and then I won’t have to pay for public transportation anymore!” Luo Xuezhen said with a smile.

A stable and restful bus for farmers

Around 6 a.m, as the rosy dawn light painted the sky, Luo Xuezhen hauled her cart of neatly arranged produce to the Zhangjiawan Station on the Zhihe Road to catch the J202 Bus, located outside her village.

On the platform, Luo Xuezhen was quick to notice a new sign which read “Stations for the Express Bus for Vegetable Farmers.” She said, “It wasn’t here the day before yesterday. This is new.”

At 6:15 a.m, a J202 bus arrived. The door opened, but the bus was filled with vegetable baskets already. The driver suggested we wait for the next bus as the current one was full.

Within 5 minutes, there came another J202 Bus. The bus safety officer helped Luo Xuezhen get her vegetable baskets and cart onto the bus. Soon, five or six farmers arrived one after another, filling the aisle of the bus with baskets of various fresh vegetables.

As the bus safety officer introduced, the J202 Bus is designated to be the “Express Bus for Vegetable Farmers.” To save time, the bus now only stops at 10 stations instead of the previous 60 stations.

Luo Xuezhen and the other farmers were excited to hear this news, as an earlier arrival at the market entailed finding a good stall, in turn welcoming the first wave of customers and an early return home.

The bus permeated with the scent of fresh vegetables, as the farmers were exchanged information about vegetable prices. Their faces lit up with excitement when discussing the upcoming peak sales season next month.

It is known that drivers with excellent driving skills and with good service were selected by J202 Bus to form a team responsible for the operation of “Express Bus for Vegetable Farmers.” Hu Simin, one of the drivers, noted that being steady is paramount because farmers often carry fragile goods like eggs with them. The drivers of the J202 Bus are familiar with the road conditions, thus potholes can be avoided in time. They also adjust the air conditioner to a comfortable temperature, allowing the early-rising farmers to rest in the vehicle.

Earlier arrival

Just in time for peak sales

After Luo Xuezhen boarded J202 Bus, the bus only stopped at the Wulongquan South stop and Wulongquan Street stop and then traveled straight towards the Beihua Street stop located at the centre of Jiangxia district, which is the destination of the farmers. It was not 7 a.m. yet when the bus arrived at the stop.

“That was so fast! I arrived half an hour earlier than before,”Luo Xuezhen said while dragging the cart and quickly ran to the market.

The vegetables had not been set up at the stall, yet customers had already come forward to choose.“Ms. Luo, you are here so early today! Why didn’t you come yesterday? I walked around the market several times but didn’t find you.”A regular customer who came from the near Hubei University on Metro Line 7 greeted Luo Xuezhen warmly as soon as he met her.

“It’s been hot recently and there are fewer vegetables in the field. So I come here every other day,” Luo Xuezhen replied. She remarked to everyone she met that the “Express Bus for Vegetable Farmers” had been launched, and she would “arrive half an hour earlier from now on, so feel free to come early or the vegetables might sell out.”

As Luo Xuezhen had arrived just in time for the earliest wave of a peak in buyers, she sold out the more than 30 kilograms of vegetables she brought before 9 a.m. “Coming earlier is really a fast track to selling out. I used to arrive late sometimes and miss the best selling time so that I had to sell my produce till noon,” Luo Xuezhen said.

Taking the hoe and basket from her mother, Luo has dealt with the farm fields for more than 30 years. Her husband used to work in a factory near their home and rarely farmed. After a serious illness last year, her husband stayed at home, but Luo Xuezhen still does all sorts of things alone including growing vegetables, picking and selling vegetables.

Now, her two children are married, working in the central city of Wuhan, and they give their parents a “pension” every month, so that their parents will not have to work hard. But Luo cannot give up her attachment to the land. Although without the need to hustle for living, she is accustomed to working on the fields every day. In addition to farming and growing vegetables, she also raises more than 50 free range chickens. On the “vegetable bus”, the produce can be sold in the city at a good price.

Last year, Luo saved more than 100,000 yuan to build three new rooms in the backyard, equipped with a new kitchen and bathroom. It greatly improved her living conditions.

“These years, thanks to the “vegetable bus”, traveling has become much more easier. Now, we have a stable income of tens of thousands of yuan every year, life is getting better each day!” Luo Xuezhen said.

Direct access to the farmer’s market

Every day, hundreds of farmers are transported by the J202 Bus, delivering thousands of kilograms of fresh fruit and vegetables to thousands of households. The J202 Bus “Express Bus for Vegetable Farmers” connects the urban and rural areas, opening up a convenient, stable and affordable mode of transportation for fresh agricultural produce, and becoming a solid force for rural vitalization. After each bus arrives at the terminal, the driver and cleaning staff carefully clean up the scattered vegetable leaves and soil in the bus to ensure that the vehicle is clean and tidy, ready for the next operation.

On the first day of the opening of “Express Bus for Vegetable Farmers,” the person in charge of J202 Bus collected many opinions and suggestions from farmers while on the ride. He was very glad to learn that all agreed with the change.

Dai Gang, director of Jiangxia Public Transport Co. of Wuhan Urban Development Group Co.Ltd, told reporters that the news article on the “Express Bus for Vegetable Farmers” from Jimu News made a tremendous difference, and more passengers are voicing their opinions and suggestions. Some farmers said that the farmer’s market where they sell vegetables is located opposite to the Beihua Street Station. After getting off, they would have to drag the cart across the road. So they hope that J202 Bus can improve the station. After detailed research, the bus company moved the Beihua Street station to the other side near the market on September 8, thus ensuring the farmers can get straight to the market once disembarking from the bus, which is more practical and reduces the safety risks of crossing the road.
