Ever so quick in her pace, Yang Qianfeng exudes an unmatching aura despite her small stature.
On March 16th, Yang Qianfeng, a rehabilitation therapist at the rehabilitation department of Xiangyang Central Hospital in Hubei Province, skillfully transferred a patient weighing 80 kilograms from a wheelchair to a hospital bed, supporting the patient’s upper body with one hand and the patient’s legs with the other.
Yang Qianfeng, who weighs 54 kilograms, is physically stronger than her smaller stature might suggest. Always agile in her pace, she is energetic and can carry patients around without breaking a sweat.
Born in 1997, she has been lifting weights and working out for 8 years straight since her sophomore year in hopes of becoming a good rehabilitation therapist. “I run a half marathon every weekend because I can only provide good care to my patients if I am healthy and fit,” Yang said. Her carefree laughter echoed in the ward, bringing hope to her patients.

“Mr. Chen, is there still a lot of phlegm in your lungs?” On the morning of March 6th, Yang Qianfeng began her day’s work at the cardiorespiratory rehabilitation ward of Dongjin section of Xiangyang Central Hospital, patting one patient on the back and helping another turn over.
“I am a cardio respiratory physiotherapist. Generally, my job involves helping critically ill patients recover voluntary respiration and improve their respiratory functions.” Yang informed the reporter that most of her patients are critically ill with impaired consciousness in ICU.
“Mr. Chen, let me help you. Lie down on your right side for a few minutes.” Yang conducted a lung auscultation on Mr. Chen, and carried out postural drainage rehabilitation training with him after examining his vitals. Postural drainage refers to placing the patient in a specific posture, and aiding the movement of lung secretions from the peripheral airway to the large airway by means of gravity, which in turn facilitates the discharge of phlegm and reduces inflammation in the lungs.
“The posture in which the patient is placed differs depending on the severity of the patient’s pulmonary inflammation, the amount and location of the lung secretions.” Yang said that she has to take care of 15 patients a day, and every patient usually undergoes rehabilitation treatment once a day. When faced with patients in critical condition, multiple rehabilitation treatments are required. “These patients have been bedridden and in a coma for a long time, so it can be very tiring to shift their postures in the hospital bed. My colleagues in the department think I’m ‘superwoman’ because I’m actually pretty strong physically.
For each patient, the posture need to be shifted at least twice and transported at least 5 times a day. 15 of these patients need to be moved at least 45 times, and with each weighing an average of 120 pounds, she lags at least 5,400 pounds of weight every day. Hearing these numbers, Yang smiled shyly and said proudly, “I exercise by doing aerobics and lifting weights everyday, and I also run half marathons. It’s really all for my patients”.
“The most tiring day was when I stood for 14 hours straight.” Yang told the reporter, adding that she began exercising regularly during her practicals in her sophomore year. “I was less than 160cm tall and weighed only 50 kilograms at that time. I felt completely helpless facing a patient who was 180cm tall and weighed 80 kilograms.”
“If I couldn’t move the patient, how could I help them with their rehabilitation and treatment?” Yang decided to start weight lifting and doing core strength training every day. “Now I can hold a plank for 10 minutes easily!” Yang said.
Yang earns trust and admiration from patient’s families
In the hospital, in addition to caring for patients, rehabilitation therapists also need to comfort their patients’ families. “No problem is too difficult for me!” she said.
Yang recalled that when she first arrived at the hospital in 2021, many of the patients’ families underestimated the importance of rehabilitation and found it pointless. Mr. Xu was a patient who had become paralyzed after suffering from a stroke. One day, while Yang suggested Mr. Xu undergo rehabilitation treatment, his family pessimistically said, “He is better off laying in bed, we don’t really expect him to ever walk again in the future.”
“With timely rehabilitation and exercise, it is possible to walk normally!” While Yang explained this to them, she devised a plan to convince Mr. Xu’s family.
She noticed that next to Xu’s bed was a patient with Parkinson’s disease, who could hardly walk steadily. “By tomorrow, she will be able to walk again with my help!” Yang pointed to the patient.
The next day, after seeing the said patient actually walk, Xu’s family was finally convinced and approved Yang’s rehabilitation plan. Yang explained to the reporter, in the case of the patient with Parkinson’s disease, if shortly after medication the treatment is paired with acupoint stimulation techniques such as acupuncture and massages, it is possible to gain nearly immediate recovery in mobility. By routinely taking rehabilitation training, patients can gradually regain mobility.
After over two years of rehabilitation training, Mr. Xu has largely resumed a normal life, and his family is both in awe of and grateful for Yang Qianfeng’s efforts.
“My mother’s lung infection hasn’t gotten better at all, and she still has so much phlegm every day!” “My mother is the most important person to me. If anything happens to her, you will hear it from me!” At the end of last year, a woman in her thirties stormed into the hospital searching for Yang Qianfeng to air her grievances. Yang qianfeng learned that the woman’s last name was Yang and she was a senior executive at a company in Shanghai who was under immense stress. Her mother had been hospitalized after a sudden cerebral hemorrhage and her father had also gotten injured while rushing out. This entailed Ms. Yang had to care for both of her parents by herself. Faced with the pressures of her daytime job and caring for her parents at night, everything began taking an emotional toll on her.
Seeing Ms. Yang was physically and emotionally exhausting, Yang Qianfeng consoled her, saying, “Medical personnel in the hospital will look after your parents carefully. You can go home and rest.” Afterwards, Yang Qianfeng gave detailed hands-on training to the nurses, teaching them basic rehabilitation exercises. Aware of Miss Yang’s busy schedule, Yang Qianfeng informed her of the treatment plan by sending her messages. Once approved, they implemented the plan accordingly, and both sides cooperated very well. Eventually, with her mother’s condition visibly improving, Ms. Yang felt reassured to return to work in Shanghai.
Yang Qianfeng said that strengthening communication, understanding their needs, and providing humanistic care are her three strategies in dealing with patients and their families. “When proper communication is achieved, they are more cooperative. When their needs are clearly understood, the treatment plans I provided become more targeted. In addition, by sincerely caring for patients and their families, satisfaction with the recovery results is guaranteed.”

In the ICU of the southern section of Xiangyang Central Hospital, 71-year-old Mr. Song is undergoing lower limb intelligent feedback training under the guidance of a rehabilitation robot.
“The patient lies diagonally on this rehabilitation equipment and exerts force on the foot pedals guided by the prompts on the screen. The screen then displays various indicators such as the span and intensity of the patient’s pedaling” Yang said. With the assistance of the rehabilitation robot, severely bedridden patients can improve blood circulation in their lower limbs, strengthen sensory stimulation to the lower limbs, and bolster their cardiopulmonary endurance, all of which are beneficial for recovery.
Mr. Song had been bedridden for a long time due to a cerebral hemorrhage. With unpredictable fluctuations in his condition and severe lung infection, he was completely reliant on a ventilator and gradually developed myasthenia. His family hoped intensive rehabilitation exercises in the ICU would improve his quality of life. Therefore, Yang conducted daily postural transfer and respiratory training for Mr. Song, strengthening his limb mobility. Additionally, targeted exercises with lower limb rehabilitation robots were employed to improve cardiovascular endurance and enhance lower limb blood circulation. After a period of rehabilitation treatment, Mr. Song was successfully weaned off the ventilator and transferred to a general ward.
Mr. Long, another patient suffering from cerebral infarction, had been confined to bed for several days. During a recent rainy and snowy weather, he developed acute pneumonia, resulting in respiratory failure. He then became dependent on a ventilator for over a month, which led to the gradual onset of muscle weakness and atrophy. Witnessing Mr. Long’s decline, countless tubes protruding from his body, his family began to contemplate the idea of giving up.
“There is a specialist, Yang Qianfeng, who focuses on cardiopulmonary rehabilitation in the rehabilitation department, and she is good at helping patients regain respiratory functions. Should we ask her to assess whether it’s possible for Mr. Long to be weaned off the ventilator?” suggested Mr. Long’s attending physician. With the family’s consent, Yang began providing comprehensive treatment to Mr. Long, including assisted breathing, airway clearance, and postural adaptation training. She also used a simple rehabilitation robot to help him regain lower limb muscle strength. After a week of treatment, Mr. Long was successfully weaned off the ventilator and was breathing independently. Now, with the assistance of his family members, he can use a wheelchair during outings without oxygen support.
“Look, Ms. Yang can grab objects with her left hand now!” Yang Qianfeng showed a video from a patient to the reporter. Ms. Yang, in her 50s, had difficulty moving her left side after a stroke. While receiving treatment in rehabilitation, she also found a job doing accounting at home. Now, although Ms. Yang’s walking is still slightly unsteady, she is confident about resuming a healthy life in the future.
“I love my job and I’m proud to be a rehabilitation therapist!” Yang Qianfeng said, “As long as patients need me, I’ll always be there ready to help.”
