Following the news that his old friend Newsom had visited the Great Wall, Sun Bangchun took out his erhu album “Presenting the Chinese Dream”, pointed to the track “The Great Wall”, and proudly told the Jimu News reporters, “When Newsom was still the mayor of San Francisco, he listened to this album and told me, ‘Your piece, The Great Wall, is absolutely incredible!’ He loved it so much that he kept more than ten of my albums in his car!”

Exactly how much did Newsom, now the governor of California, enjoy Sun's performance? He even named October 1, 2007, as “Bangchun (Benjamin) Sun DAY” in San Francisco.
Sun, born in 1956 in Jiqing Street, Wuhan, is an internationally renowned professional erhu player specializing in playing the trombone and erhu. He has performed multiple times at the San Francisco City Hall, sparking a local craze for Chinese culture. Sun expressed that Schwarzenegger, the former Californian Governor had praised him for his performance, and California Governor Newsom, who recently concluded a visit to China, was also one of his devoted audiences.

On the morning of October 30, in Sun's studio, the erhu performing artist recalled this past event to reporters.
Sun mentioned that he and Newsom got acquainted after an erhu performance.
During an early event, Newsom, then the mayor of San Francisco, watched Sun's erhu performance and showed great interest. Ever since, Newsom fell in love with erhu performances, and whenever Sun performed in San Francisco's Chinatown, Newsom would undoubtedly be in attendance. October 1, 2007, is an unforgettable day for Sun as this day was named “Bangchun (Benjamin) Sun DAY” by Newsom, in recognition of Sun's outstanding achievements in performing arts and his contributions to Sino-US cultural exchange.

In Sun's hard disk, is a treasured photo of him with Newsom.
“In his younger years, Newsom was tall and handsome, and always drew attention and favor wherever he went.” Sun opened his photo with Newsom from his computer and excitedly recalled their musical exchanges, “He really enjoyed listening to the erhu. I remember his car was black, very stylish, and there were over ten CDs of my erhu performances inside.”

In regard to this friendship, Sun offered a unique perspective, “It seems that ‘Bangchun (Benjamin) Sun DAY’ symbolizes Governor Newsom's appreciation for the erhu and his recognition of my artistic talent. However, it actually reflects his profound reverence for Chinese culture and his enduring friendship with the Chinese community.”
This erhu virtuoso, whose musical journey extends from Wuhan to California, has dedicated decades to presenting Chinese art to Western audiences, rendering many familiar Western melodies on the erhu. In his quest to promote Chinese culture, he conceived an album entitled “Presenting the Chinese Dream,” featuring 14 erhu compositions, including “The Moon Over a Fountain”, “Silk Love”, and “The Great Wall”.

Sun presented this album to Governor Newsom, who gladly accepted it, expressing his fondness for the piece “The Moon Over a Fountain” and his profound awe of the piece “The Great Wall”.
Governor Newsom's recent visit to China was meticulously planned, with one of the highlights being a tour of the Great Wall in Beijing. On October 26th, he stood at the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall and exclaimed to the U.S. Ambassador to China, Mr. Burns: “I love this place.” He praised the Great Wall as an epic architectural masterpiece.
Sun mentioned that many years ago, Governor Newsom had been profoundly moved by the erhu composition “The Great Wall”, and now, during his visit to China, he personally toured this “epic” Great Wall. This full circle moment was indeed a cause for joy for Sun.
Forging Friendships with the Chinese, Nurturing a Passion for Chinese Business
What is the inspiration of Newsom's love for China? According to Sun, it is deeply intertwined with the local Chinese diaspora in San Francisco.
San Francisco stands as one of the cities in the United States with the highest proportion of Chinese Americans. Its historic Chinatown, established by Chinese immigrants known as “Old-Cantonese” who ventured to California during the 19th-century Gold Rush, is the oldest such enclave in North America.
Newsom's formative years unfolded in this city. According to reports cited by Nanfang Metropolis Daily, Chinatown was an inescapable part of his route to school during his childhood. He has publicly expressed his profound emotional attachment to the Chinese community, recalling his father’s early lessons on the pivotal contributions of Chinese culture to the development of the United States. During his recent visit to China, Newsom reiterated, “In history, the Chinese community has made substantial contributions to the growth of California.”
At the age of 36, Newsom made his entry into the political arena, securing his election as Mayor of San Francisco in November 2003. Remarkably, on the morning following his electoral victory, he took to the streets of San Francisco's Chinatown. He candidly acknowledges that his present political accomplishments owe much to the unwavering support he has received from the Asian American community.
“It’s natural for one to love China when there is Chinese people and culture such as the food and music around you.” Sun said, mayor of San Francisco or lieutenant governor or governor of California, Newsom is very supportive of local Chinese activities. Whenever there is a major Chinese activity, there is Newsom.

Except for the influence of Chinese culture, “loving trading with Chinese” is also a reason for Newsom’s love for China.
In 2008, Newsom visited Shanghai as the mayor of San Francisco, and implemented China-San Francisco economic development initiative (ChinaSF) for enterprises from Shanghai and San Francisco to cooperate.

“China has a massive market with a powerful economy, no wonder Newsom is fond of doing business with Chinese people.” Sun explained, just as Newsom himself said, California has always been an important gateway for US cooperation with China, and there is a profound tradition of friendship and cooperation between California and numerous Chinese provinces and cities.
“The more successful China is, the more successful the world will be,” Newsom said during his visit. Sun said that this is indeed Newsom's true words.
The foundation of China-US relations lies in the people
In recent years, Sun spent more time in his hometown and continued to work for the folk culture exchanges between China and the United States. Sun actively promoted the economic, trade and cultural exchanges and cooperation between the United States and his hometown.
As for the expectations for future China-US exchanges, Sun said, “I hope to take advantage of the opportunity of Conference on Overseas Chinese Pioneering and Developing in China (COCPDC) held in my hometown Hubei, respond to the call of ‘the foundation of China-US relations lies in the people’, and drive more Hubei overseas Chinese to play an active role.”
