The autumn season boasts a diverse range of flavors, yet none quite rival the undisputed allure of roasted chestnuts. It's often said that autumn arrives in the aroma of roasted chestnuts.
In recent days, a Jimu News reporter visited chestnut wholesale markets, fresh markets, and vendors selling roasted chestnuts in Wuhan, and learned that the larger chestnuts mainly used for cooking, sourced from Hubei province, have been available on the market for nearly 10 days, while the smaller chestnuts from the northern regions, primarily intended for roasting, will take slightly more time before hitting the market.
Compared to the same period last year, there has been a slight increase in the prices of fresh large chestnuts, while street-side roasted chestnuts continue to be priced at 40 to 46 yuan per kilogram.
The Tempting First Bite of Chestnuts in Autumn
“Last week, chestnuts started to be available for sale, and the flavor is deliciously nutty and sweet,” said one of the buyers while selecting chestnuts with a reddish-brown outer skin at the entrance of the Changgang Road Vegetable Market in Hankou on the morning of September 11th. He mentioned that he had previously bought 1 kilogram of chestnuts to cook with chicken, and the texture was excellent. “My child really loves chestnuts. Foods like this, a flavor unique only to autumn, we must savor while we can,” he added.
There are many vendors selling chestnuts in the vegetable market. Some vendors, due to slower sales, take their time peeling off the hairy coat of the chestnuts, making them appear more fresh and enticing to customers. Chestnuts with shells range in price from 12 yuan to 18 yuan per kg, depending on their quality and size, while shelled chestnut kernels are priced between 30 yuan and 32 yuan per kilogram.
The reporter later visited the open-air markets in the Sanyanqiao and Huaqiao areas of Hankou and found even more vendors selling chestnuts, the prices slightly lower than those at the Changgang Road Vegetable Market. One vendor explained that the large chestnuts currently available in Wuhan mainly come from Shandong, Yunnan and other provinces, and chestnuts produced in Hubei have not yet entered the market in large quantities. Prices are slightly higher compared to the same period last year, with an increase of about 2 yuan per kilogram.
Prices for Roasted Chestnuts Remain Unchanged from Last Year
In recent days, as the temperature in Wuhan has dropped, there have been more vendors selling roasted chestnuts on the streets.
According to information obtained by our reporters, in stores mainly selling roasted chestnuts, the price remains relatively stable compared to the same period last year, ranging from 40 yuan to 46 yuan per kilogram. However, in some internet-famous stores, prices are slightly higher.
At noon on September 12th, a long queue stretched outside a roasted chestnut store on Taipei Road in Hankou. Everyone waited in line eager to try “the sweetest roasted chestnuts” that the store is famous for.
“I've been keeping an eye on this store since the end of August, anticipating my first chestnuts this autumn,” Ms. Wang, who drove from Wuchang specifically to buy chestnuts there, told the reporter. “The prices have not changed much in recent years, but there are so many customers that it takes a lot of time to queue up.”
In Yongqing Street, Hankou, Mr. Sun, who has been selling roasted chestnuts for many years, has just cooked the first batch of chestnuts this autumn. The price for large roasted chestnuts is 36 yuan per kilogram, while the price for small chestnuts is 40 yuan per kilogram. “The wholesale price of chestnuts has not gone up this year, so I haven't raised the price either. After all, our business mainly relies on local customers and we emphasize small profits but quick turnover,” he said.
Gradual Increase in Local Supply of Chestnuts
“At present, the supply is just starting to pick up, and the total volume per day is not very large. But the prices are relatively stable,” said Mr. Zhang, a chestnut wholesaler who has done business in Xinrong and Xudong. He is currently busy purchasing chestnuts from Qianxi, Hebei.
According to Mr. Zhang, most of the chestnuts sold on the market in Wuhan come from Luotian, Xiaogan, Macheng and other local areas in Hubei Province. Meanwhile, chestnuts from other areas like Linyi, Shandong have also entered peak harvesting period. These chestnuts are primarily large-sized products and are mainly sold in the fresh market. A small amount of high-quality chestnuts will also be used for roasting, but they will be sold in large quantities until October.
The domestic chestnut planting industry is widely distributed in 24 provinces and cities. Among them, the output of the three main producing provinces of Hubei, Hebei and Shandong accounts for about half of the total national output. Hubei Province abounds in chestnut species, and is the largest chestnut producing area in southern China.
In the wholesale market, the supply of chestnuts in Hubei Province is gradually increasing. According to the information provided by wholesalers, the price of local chestnuts will drop significantly after October, about 8 to 12 yuan per kg.
Waiting for the Small Northern Chestnuts
In an interview, a number of local residents who bought large chestnuts said that roasted chestnuts made from small chestnuts from Qianxi County, Hebei Province are more soft in consistency and just overall delicious. However, the reporter learned that the small chestnuts in Qianxi County are currently produced less, hence Wuhan residents will have to wait for a taste.
Mr. Ding, who has been engaged in chestnut wholesale business for many years, told reporters that the small chestnuts in Qianxi have already been harvested, but he is yet to purchase a large number of them to Wuhan as he still needs to negotiate the price. He orders chestnuts from Hebei, Anhui, Yunnan and other chestnut producing areas in early September every year. According to the market, the wholesale price of chestnuts transported from Qianxi to Wuhan may be over 20 yuan a kilo.
Mr. Ding introduced that after mass purchasing and sorting in Hebei, high-quality small chestnuts were sent back to Wuhan. Generally speaking, roasted chestnuts from Qianxi will be sold in large quantities in late September, when the public will get a feast for their appetite.
