Former Gaokao Top Scorer Returns to Serve Motherland

又是一年高考落幕。回想起32年前,田长麟十分感慨:“阴差阳错”与理想的中专学校失之交臂后,他“被迫”上了高中,最后成为武汉市江夏区(原武昌县)理科高考状元。

The college entrance examination has just ended.Recalling 32 years ago, Tian Changlin became sentimental:after missing out on his dream technical secondary school, he was “forced”to go to high school wherehe became the top scorer in the college entrance examination in Jiangxia District (formerly Wuchang County),Wuhan.

此后,田长麟开启人生新的篇章。在上海交通大学本硕连读后,他远赴美国深造。16年前学成归来,他参与建设了世界最先进的稳态强磁场实验装置。

Since then, a new chapter was opened in his life. After he graduated from a combinedbachelors/masters degree program at Shanghai JiaoTong University, he went to the United States for further study. When he returned to China 16 years ago, he participated in the construction of the worlds most advanced Steady High Magnetic Field Facility.

田长麟有很多头衔:中国科技大学教授、博导,国家杰出青年基金获得者,中科院强磁场科学中心副主任,中科院临床研究医院副院长……近年来,他在国际主流学术期刊发表论文150余篇。

Tian has been awarded many titles: professor and doctoral supervisor of University of Science and Technology of China, recipientof National Outstanding Youth Fund, Deputy Director of Strong Magnetic Field Science Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Vice President of Clinical Research Hospital of Chinese Academy of Sciences…Over theyears, he has published more than 150 papers in international mainstream academic journals.

日前,在安徽合肥科学岛,极目新闻记者采访了这位“海归”江夏人。

A few days ago, at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the reporter interviewed this “overseasreturnee” Jiangxia native.

阴差阳错

A coincidental chance

荣膺全县理科高考状元

Earning top score in the college entrance examination in Jiangxia District

田长麟能成为当年的理科高考状元,用他自己的话说,可谓“阴差阳错”。

Becoming the top scorerin science that year in the Gaokao, is described, in his own words, as “coincidental”.

1988年夏天,中考“失利”的田长麟未能进入期望中的中专学校,他只好就读原武昌县一中(现江夏一中)。

In the summer of 1988, Tian was unable to enroll in his dream technical secondary school, instead,helandeda spot at Wuchang County No.1 High School (now Jiangxia No.1 HighSchool).

“当时中专毕业能转户口、包分配,报考人数多,中专分数线也比重点高中线高。”田长麟告诉极目新闻记者,“可惜我的中考分数差了3分。”

“At that time, technical secondary school graduates could enjoy policies such as Hukoutransferand guaranteed job assignments, therefore, such schools were flooded with applicants, and the enrolment cut-off scorewas higher than that ofkey senior high schools.Its a pity that my score was three points lowerthan the admission score.” Tian said.

上高中后,自小爱好历史和文学的田长麟,为了将来好就业,选择了学理科。“弟弟记忆力好,表达能力强,学习成绩一直名列前茅。”田长麟的哥哥田长奇回忆,“当时家里有20多亩田地,放学后他要帮忙做农活,没有业余学习时间,但他总是能够找到很好的学习方法。”

Tian loved history and literature since childhood, but in high school,he chose to study science for better job prospect in the future. Tian Changqi,Tian Changlins brother, said, “my younger brother has a good memory and a nimble tongue, and his academic performance has always been among the best.At that time, we had a piece of farm land of over 20 mu (a Chinese unit of area equal to 1/15 hectare)at home, so hehad to help with farm work after school,and had verylittle time to study, but he always could find an efficient way to study.”

功夫不负有心人,1991年高考,他荣膺武昌县理科高考状元。

All his hard work finally paid off. In 1991, he received the top score in the college entrance examination (Gaokao) in Jiangxia District.

高考成绩出来后,田长麟的成绩可以报考国内任何一所大学。考虑到自己的化学和生物成绩突出,最终他选择了上海交通大学生物化工专业。进校后,他又通过激烈竞争,主修了应用电子专业。

Tian Changlins Gaokao score could send him to whichever university he fanciedin China. Considering his outstanding performancein chemistry and biology, he finally chose to study biochemistry at Shanghai JiaoTong University.In college, he also majored in applied electronics after enduring fierce competition.

本科毕业,田长麟被免试保研,主修分子生物学。1997年硕士毕业,他自费赴美国佛罗里达州立大学深造。

After receiving his bachelors degree, he was accepted by the universitys postgraduate program on recommendation to study molecular biology. In 1997, he graduated from Shanghai JiaoTong Universitywith a mastersdegree and enrolled inFlorida State University for further study at his own expense.

赴美一年后,田长麟的父亲便查出癌症,第二年不幸离世。没有陪伴父亲最后的时光,成为田长麟最大的遗憾。田长奇回忆,弟弟从小便十分孝顺,他经常给忙完农活回家的父母捶背、捏脚。回国工作后,虽然远在合肥,他每月必回一趟武汉,看望陪伴母亲,直到前几年母亲离世。

One year later, his father was diagnosed with cancer and passed away the next year. It became Tians biggest regret that he was absent for his fathers final moments.TianChangqi recalled that his brother has been a good son since he was little: he would give foot and back massages to his parents when they came home from farm work. After returning to China, although he works far away from Wuhan, he would travel back once a month to visit his mother,until shepassed away a few years ago.

在佛罗里达州立大学,田长麟十分活跃。他在美国的学弟、现中科院武汉物理与数学研究所研究员李从刚回忆,田长麟乐于助人,被选为该校中国学生会会长。

At Florida State University, Tian was quite active. According to Li Conggang, Tians friendat the university in the US and currently a researcher at the Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tian was fairly obliging and was elected as the president of the Chinese Students Association at the university.

生活中活跃的田长麟,治学上却十分低调勤勉。2003年,他获得佛罗里达州立大学/美国国家强磁场实验室分子生物物理博士学位,随后进入美国范德堡大学从事生物化学博士后研究。

While Tian is active in his personal life, he remains low-key and diligent in his academic pursuits. In 2003, he obtained doctoral degree in Molecular Biophysics from Florida State University/National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, and then conducted postdoctoral research on Biochemistry at Vanderbilt University in the United States.

2007年,田长麟又做出一个重大人生决定,到中国科技大学任教,因为该校的核磁研究在全球很有竞争力,而且正在筹建稳态强磁场实验装置。

In 2007, Tian made another major decision and joined the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) as a faculty member since the nuclear magnetic research at that university is exceedingly competitive across the globe and the construction of a steady-state high magnetic field experimental facility wasin the pipeline at the time.

强磁场与极低温、超高压一样,是现代科学实验最重要的极端条件之一,为物理、化学、材料、生物等学科研究提供了新途径,对于发现和认识新现象、揭示新规律具有重要作用。数十年来,世界各国学者在强磁场领域的研究非常活跃,取得了大批原创性重大成果,并推动了相关新兴高技术产业的发展。中国要在生命科学、医学、功能材料和器件研究等方面赶超世界先进水平,迫切需要建立世界一流的强磁场装置。

Similar to ultra-low temperatures and ultra-high pressures, high magnetic fields are one of the most important extreme conditions for modern scientific experiments. They provide new approaches for research in physics, chemistry, materials, biology, and other disciplines, and play a crucial role in discovering and understanding new phenomena and revealing new laws. For decades, scholars from various countries have been actively engaged in high magnetic field research, achieving numerous original and significant results and advancing the development of related emerging high-tech industries. It is imperative for China to establish a world-class high magnetic field facility to reach the worlds advanced level in life sciences, medicine, functional materials, device research, and other fields.

2017年,经过9年多的建设,由中科院合肥物质院强磁场科学中心、中国科技大学联合承担的稳态强磁场实验装置项目通过国家验收,使我国成为全球第5个拥有稳态强磁场装置的国家。

In 2017, after more than nine years of development, the Steady High Magnetic Field Facilityproject, jointly undertaken by the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and USTC, passed the national acceptance, making China the fifth country in the world to possess such facility.

“目前,我们的稳态强磁场是世界上最先进的。我很有幸参与了这一国家重大科技基础设施建设。”田长麟说。去年8月,该装置创造45.22T的稳态强磁场,打破了美国保持23年的世界纪录。

“At the moment, our Steady High Magnetic Field Facility is the most advanced in the world. I am so honored to have participated in the construction of this major national scientific and technological infrastructure.” said Tian. Last August, the facility generated a steady high magnetic field of 45.22 Tesla, breaking the world record that the United States had held for 23 years.

近年来,田长麟围绕肿瘤、神经疾病、免疫疾病等相关重要蛋白质,开展结构、功能和多肽药物研究,并以通讯作者、合作作者身份,在国际主流学术期刊发表论文150余篇。

In recent years, centering on important proteins concerning tumors, neurological disorders, immune diseases, Tian has conducted studies on their structures and functions, and peptide drugs. He has published over 150 papers as the corresponding author or co-author in leading international academic journals.

担任中科院合肥大科学中心综合管理部部长期间,田长麟还带领团队,参与完成该中心的筹建,在多个装置验收、新装置预研和申报过程中发挥了重要作用。

During his term as the Director of the General Administration Department of the Hefei Big Science Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tian also led a team and played an important role in the establishment of the center, participating in multiple device acceptances, new device pre-research, and application processes.

除了科学研究,田长麟在教学上也毫不懈怠。他经常在合肥科学岛做完试验后,立即赶往15公里外的中国科技大学上课。

Apart from doing research, Tian is also dedicated to teaching.Upon completion of experiments in the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of CAS, he would rush to the University of Science and Technology of China, located 15 kilometers away, to teach.

“田老师知识渊博,涉猎广泛,经常从量子力学讲到生物学最前沿知识。”中国科技大学在读博士生邝健说。

“Professor Tian is incredibly erudite. He often discusses cutting-edge topics from quantum mechanics to biology with us.” said Kuang Jian, a Ph.D. student at the USTC.

三年前,邝健本科毕业,以优异成绩通过了中国科技大学的硕士复试,多位导师向他发出邀请。就在他犹豫不决时,他接到一个陌生的电话。田长麟说他的实验室希望收一个有化学背景的学生,问邝健愿不愿意来。

Kuang Jian graduated with a bachelors degree fromUniversity of Science and Technology of Chinathree years ago and then passed thepostgraduatereexamination with excellent results. Several mentors invited him to be their students. Whenhe was hesitating, he received a phone callfrom an unfamiliar number, inwhich Tian said that his lab was looking for a student with a chemistry background and asked Kuangif he would like to join.

邝健没有马上答应。挂断电话后,他上网查询了田长麟的资料。“原来他是一位学术‘大拿’,但在电话里他一点都没有吹嘘自己有多牛。”邝健说。几分钟后,他做出跟随田老师的决定。

Kuang Jian did not say yesright away. After hanging up the phone, he searchedforTian Changlin online. “Turns out he isan academic ‘tycoon’, but during the phone call he didnt boast at all about how great he was.”said Kuang Jian. A few minutes later, he made the decision to acceptProf. Tians offer.

一次,邝健做实验不顺利,田长麟把他叫到办公室。“先放松一下,不要紧张。”田长麟说。他打开电脑,放起了音乐,让心情忐忑的邝健非常意外。听了一会儿音乐后,田长麟开始针对实验卡壳问题进行深入分析,并提出解决办法。回去后,邝健很快把问题解决了。

One time, as Kuang was facing challengesin an experiment, Tian Changlin called him to his officeand reassured him,“Take it easy and dont be too nervous.”He turned on the computer and played music, which surprised Kuang Jian, who was feeling uneasy. After listening to music for a while, Tian analyzed the problemsKuang was facingin the experiment and proposedsolutions. After that, Tian quickly solved the problem.

同样是化学专业出身的王志文,正在中国科技大学读硕士二年级,他也是田长麟主动打电话请来的。“田老师非常亲和,像大哥一样对待我们。”王志文说。他刚入学时,因财务系统原因,过了几个月,他的补助还未下发。田长麟知道后,第一时间找财务协调,下一个月补助就发下来了。过了很久,王志文因为另外一件事找田长麟签字,田老师问及他的补助情况。“老师那么忙,却还记得我的这件小事,让我非常感动。”王志文说。

Wang Zhiwen, also a chemistry major who is in his second year of a masters programat the University of Science and Technology of China, was also invitedvia phone call, by Tian Changlin to join his lab. “ProfessorTian is very approachable and treats us like brothers.”Wang Zhiwen said. Several months after he entered the program, his subsidy had not yet been issued due to delays with the billing system. When Tian Changlin found out about it, he went and negotiated with theaccounting department of the university, and the subsidy was issuedthe next month. After a long period had passed, when Wang Zhiwen asked Tian for his signaturefor another matter,ProfessorTian asked whether his subsidy hadbeen issued. “Heis so busy, yet he still remembered this triviathing, this deeply movedme.”Wang Zhiwen said.

“尽可能找一些交叉学科的孩子,共同努力做一点事情。”谈及学生的认可,田长麟说,“对待学生,在学术上必须严格,生活中可适当松弛。”

“I prefer those students with interdisciplinary backgrounds so we canwork together to achieve something.”When talking about his studentshigh praise, Tian said, “my principle is be strict with them in academic matters, and approachable in life matters.”

在合肥科学岛采访前,田长麟邀请记者参观了稳态强磁场装置。这一世界上最先进的实验设施,对田长麟来说具有特殊意义,也是他为祖国作贡献的最好证明。

Before the interview, Tian invited reporters to visit the Steady High Magnetic FieldFacility, the most advanced in the world, which is specialtohimbecause it is the best proof of his contribution to the motherland.

历经千帆,归来仍是少年。乡村少年、高考状元、“海归”学者……田长麟总是怀着一腔赤子之心,没有忘记从何出发。学高为师,身正为范。拥有多项顶级学术头衔的田长麟,似乎更在意老师的身份,他总是在学生最需要的时候出现,为他们排忧解难,帮他们茁壮成长。

After all the ups and downs, Tian Changlin is still full of aspirationsfromhis youth. From a countryboy tothe top scorer intheGaokao, andthenan “overseas returnee”scholar... Tian Changlin has always had a heart full of enthusiasm and aspiration. Tian always believes that a teacher is one with both high knowledge and moral integrity, therefore, even witha number of top academic titles, he seems to care more about his titleas a teacher, always being there when his students need him themost, helping them thrive.

又一年高考落幕,同样也是大学毕业季,祝所有学子都能进入理想的学校,也愿毕业的学子像田长麟教授一样永葆赤子之心。就像《追梦赤子心》的歌词一样:“继续跑,带着赤子的骄傲,生命的闪耀不坚持到底怎能看到。”

This years college entrance exams have just come to an end, so is the college graduation season. I wish all students success in enrolling intotheir ideal colleges, and hope newly-graduateswill keep their original aspirations like Professor Tian Changlin. Just like the lyrics of “Chasing Dreams”: “Keep running with the enthusiasm of youth, the brilliance of life can only be seen when you persevere to the end.”
