“我们在这里炸淀粉肠、年糕八年,年营收过百万,终于安家立足了。”1月1日深夜,湖北荆州长新夜巷美食街游客爆满,A1号小吃摊老板何理一边忙着炸淀粉肠,一边和极目新闻记者聊着这些年的打拼经历。油星滋滋溅落,香气渐渐弥漫,身旁的妻子孙盼默契配合招呼食客,夫妻俩以忙碌的姿态开启新的一年。
“After eight years of frying starch sausagesand rice cakes here, our annual earningshaveexceeded 1 million yuan—finally allowing us to settle down and establish roots in this city.” said He Li, the owner of Stand A1 at Changxin Night Market in Jingzhou, Hubei, as he fried starch sausages late on January 1st while chatting with a reporter from Jimu News. Oil sizzled, a smoky aroma wafting through the air as his wife Sun Pan coordinated with him seamlessly to serve customers. The couple welcomed the new year in a whirl of activity.

Unfazed By His Humble Beginnings, She Married Him Anyway
长新夜巷原名新风一路,因毗邻拥有3万余名在校生的省属高校,成为荆州人气最旺的“高校美食街”。前不久,这条1.38公里的街巷经征名升级更名,从昔日零散占道的小摊群,蜕变为规范有序的网红美食街。何理夫妻,正是这条街变迁的见证者与受益者。
Changxin Night MarketAlley,originally named Xinfeng First Road, has become Jingzhou’s most vibrant“university food street”due to its proximity to a provincial university with over 30,000 students. Not long ago, the 1.38-kilometer street underwent a renaming and upgrading process, transforming from a cluster of scattered, roadside stalls into a well-regulated and trendy food street. He Li and his wife have been witnesses to and beneficiaries of this transformation.
今年37岁的何理是湖北随州人,早年在浙江一家酒店当厨师。2015年父亲车祸受伤他回家照顾,家中积蓄耗尽且负债累累,陷入困境中的何理在此时遇到了孙盼。“我当时一无所有,她却义无反顾地嫁给了我。”何理对极目新闻记者说,和妻子打拼奋斗的日子,是他这辈子最大的幸福。婚后,经在荆州工作的堂哥介绍,夫妻俩来到荆州新风一路摆摊,起初那里大多是一些占道经营的小摊贩。
He Li, now 37 years old and hailing from Suizhou, Hubei Province, previously worked as a chef at a hotel in Zhejiang. In 2015, he returned home to care for his father who had been injured in a car accident, depleting the family’s savings and leaving them mired in debt. It was during this challenging period that he met Sun Pan. “I had nothing at thattime, but she married me without hesitation,” He Li told Jimu News, adding that the days of striving and hustling alongside his wife were the greatest happiness of his life. After their marriage, through the introduction of He Li’s cousin working in Jingzhou, the couple came to Xinfeng First Road to set up their stand, which was initially populated mostly by roadside vendors operating haphazardly.
为还债糊口,两人每日凌晨四时备货,六时开摊至中午,下午四时再出摊,坚守到深夜十一时。“当时环境差、摊位拥挤,冬冻手僵、夏浸油汗。”孙盼说,起初卖豆皮收入微薄,2017年,他们贴合大学生口味转型炸年糕、淀粉肠,生意渐有起色。
To repay debts and make ends meet, they began their days at 4 a.m., preparing ingredients before opening the stall at 6 a.m. and running it until noon. After a break, they returned at 4 p.m. and worked until 11 p.m.“The conditions were tough back then—stalls packed tightly together, and our hands stiff from cold in winter and slick with oil and sweat in summer,” Sun Pan recalled. At first, selling Doupi, a pan-fried delicacy of gluntinous rice and minced meat, earned them little. But in 2017, they switched from selling Doupi to offering fried rice cakes and starch sausages, a move that aligned with students’ tastes and slowly turned their business around.
没上过大学的何理,很珍惜跟大学生打交道的机会,“你看,我的油都是清澈的。”闲聊间,小吃摊前排队的食客络绎不绝。何理说,每天收摊时,炸过的油绝不在第二天重复用。
Having never attended college himself, He Li treasured the chance to interact with university students. “See, the oil I use is always clean,” he would say casually as customers lined up steadily in front of their stall. He Li made it a rule never to reuse oil from the previous day.”
每天要颠漏勺,关节都起茧子了
“All that wok-jiggling every day has given me calluses on my knuckles”
“每天炸500多根年糕、1100多根淀粉肠,再多了就吃不消了。”何理告诉极目新闻记者,他一天毛收入3000多元,母亲帮忙打下手。孙盼则和岳母在不远的B56号摊位卖广式牛杂,一天能卖1000多元。“周末能卖到2000多元。”孙盼补充道。
“We fry over 500 rice cakes and more than 1,100 starch sausages daily—any more would be too much to handle,” He Li told Jimu News. With his mother’s assistance, his stall brings in over 3,000 yuan a dayin gross. Meanwhile, Sun Pan and her mother-in-law operate a Cantonese beef offal stall nearby at Booth B56, earning more than 1,000 yuan daily. “On weekends, sales can exceed 2,000 yuan,” she added.
极目新闻记者注意到,何理右手中指的第一个关节已严重肿大变形。“每天要颠漏勺,关节就起茧子了。”何理说,虽然每天很辛苦,但平均每月毛收入能达12万元,一年进账有100多万元,除去原料成本、水电、租金等,他和妻子定下一个目标:每年存下50万元。
The reporter noticed that the first joint of He Li’s right middle finger was noticeably swollen and misshapen. “All that wok-jiggling every day has given me calluses on my knuckles,” he explained. Though the work is exhausting, their monthly gross income averages 120,000 yuan, adding up to over a million yuan a year. After covering costs for ingredients, utilities, and rent, the couple aim to save 500,000 yuan annually.
孙盼说,10年来,她和丈夫一步一个脚印,一串一串地炸、一串一串地卖,从未想过一夜暴富。“从刚开始的一无所有,到后来新风一路规范运行,我们就决定在这里扎根了。”何理告诉极目新闻记者,如今他们夫妻俩已在荆州买房安家,为方便接送上幼儿园的3岁的儿子,还购置了汽车,彻底结束漂泊。
Reflecting on the past decade, Sun Pan said they had moved forward step by step, frying and selling one skewer afteranother, never banking on getting rich overnight. “We started with nothing, thenXinfeng Road became orderly and well-run, and we decided to settle here for good,” He Li said.He Li told JimuNews that theyhave now bought a home and settled down in Jingzhou. To make it easier to pick up and drop off their three-year-old son at kindergarten, they also purchased a car, bringing their years of driftingto a definitive end.
升级美食街,守护烟火气
Upgrading the Food Street to Preserve Its Street-Life Vitality
何理夫妻俩的好日子,离不开美食街的规范升级。2024年8月,荆州区城南街道将小吃街整体南迁350米,通过抽签摇号划定300个固定摊位,何理夫妻的两个摊位月租金仅600元和500元。升级后的夜市环境整洁,还配套了公厕、可容纳108辆车的停车场及垃圾中转站,6名保洁员分时段值守,保障街巷有序洁净。
The couple’s improving fortunes are inseparable from the standardized upgrading of the gourmetstreet. In August 2024, the Chengnan Subdistrict of Jingzhou District relocated the snack street 350 meters south as a whole and, through a lottery system, designated 300 fixed stalls. The two stalls run by He Li and his wife now cost only 600 yuan and 500 yuan per month respectively. Following the upgrade, the night market has become cleaner and more orderly, with supportingfacilities including public restrooms, a parking lot accommodating 108 vehicles, and a garbage transfer station. Six sanitation workers are on duty in shifts to ensure the street remains clean and well-organized.
“现在不光有大学生,节假日还有不少外地游客慕名而来。”何理明显感受到规范后夜市人气更旺。“升级美食街守护烟火气!”新风社区党委委员刘卫华介绍,为守护这份烟火气,社区成立股份经济合作社,搭建原材料溯源平台,将150多家摊位纳入全链条监管,守护群众“舌尖上的安全”。
“Now the street notonlydraws college students—during holidays, many tourists from other cities visitspecifically for the experience,” He Li said, clearly sensing a surge in foot traffic since the market was regulated. “Upgrading the street is key to preserving that classic street-like ambience,” added Liu Weihua, a member of the Xin Feng Community Party Committee. To protect this vitality, the community established a shareholding economic cooperative and built a raw-material traceability platform, bringing more than 150 stalls under full-chain supervision to ensure food safety and protect consumers’ well-being.
夜幕渐深,长新夜巷灯火依旧璀璨。何理熟练地给炸好的淀粉肠刷上酱料,递给排队食客,脸上满是满足。从一无所有到年营收百万,从漂泊摊贩到扎根城市的新荆州人,这对夫妻用十年光阴印证:平凡岗位上,只要肯吃苦、守诚信,烟火气中亦能绽放幸福之花。而这条不断升级的美食街,也正以规范与温度,孕育着更多普通人的奋斗梦想。
As night falls, Changxin Night Market remains brightly illuminated. He Li skillfully brushes sauce onto freshly fried starch sausages and hands them to customers waiting in line, his face filled with quiet satisfaction. From having nothing to achieving annual earnings exceeding one million yuan, from itinerant vendors to Jingzhou residents firmly rooted in the city, the couple’s ten-year journey proves that evenon the most ordinary paths, diligence and integrity can still allow happiness to bloom amid everyday street life. As for this ever-changing street, shaped by both timely regulations and a warm ambience, is nurturing the dreams of many more ordinary strivers.
