Jimu News (By correspondents: Jiao Guobin, Wu Yihong)On November 22, staff of the Hubei Badong Golden Monkey National Nature Reserve captured rare close-up images of a golden eagle—a national first-class protected wildlife species—during a routine patrol (pictured). This extraordinary sighting is a testament to the tangible achievements in biodiversity conservation within the Three Gorges Reservoir area.

Located within the biodiverse-rich belt near 30°N latitude, the Hubei Badong Golden Monkey National Nature Reserve spans over 30,000 mu (about 200 square kilometers) with forest coverage reaching 95.39%, providing an excellent habitat for many rare animals and plants. The golden eagle recorded this time is an adult, characterized by its dark brown plumage interspersed with white streaks, a crown-like patch of golden-brown feathers on its head, a sharp yellow hooked beak, and keen eyes—all highlighting its majestic raptor features. The clear images also offer valuable material for identifying the species and conducting scientific research.
As a large raptor of the Aquila genus, the golden eagle boasts a wingspan of up to 2.2 meters and can dive at speeds reaching 200 km/h. It preys on small to medium-sized mammals and birds and has almost no natural predators. Given its stringent requirements for forest coverage and ecosystem integrity, the golden eagle is regarded as a “flagship species” for assessing regional ecological quality and is currently listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
“The frequent appearances of raptors such as golden eagles fully indicate the integrity of the reserve’s biological chain and the richness of its food chain,” said Qian Caidong, head of the reserve’s administration bureau. He added that the next steps include optimizing the deployment of infrared cameras, increasing monitoring frequency, and systematically studying the activity ranges and migration patterns of golden eagles and other raptors to strengthen targeted conservation efforts. Meanwhile, initiatives such as legal awareness campaigns, community engagement, and nature education programs will be promoted to enhance public awareness of ecological protection and reinforce the ecological security barrier.
In recent years, the reserve has established a comprehensive ecological protection system by delineating ecological conservation red lines, restoring habitats, promoting green production methods, and encouraging local villagers to transition from “hunters” to “guardians.” To date, 428 species of terrestrial wild vertebrates have been recorded in the reserve, including 85 nationally protected wildlife species. The population of Golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana) has also increased to 823.
