Jimu News (Reporter Guan Qianyu, Correspondent Wang Wei) A sudden workplace accident caused devastating injuries to both hands of 53-year-old Ms. Chen. During the dire moment, a team of surgeons from the division of Hand Surgery, Foot and Ankle, and Microscopic Orthopedics at Taihe Hospital of Shiyan City, Hubei Province opted for a bold procedure: to “move” the 4 intact fingers from her left hand to her severely damaged right hand. On November 16, Jimu News was informed by the hospital that Ms. Chen’s surgery was a success.

In the early morning of November 8, Ms. Chen was caught in a high-speed machine during her night shift, leaving her left forearm completely severed. Four fingers on her right hand, except the ring finger, were also badly wounded——the tip of her thumb was lost, half the skin of her index finger was avulsed, her middle finger was broken off at two points, and the little finger suffered full-thickness skin loss, leaving only exposed bones attached to tendons. The entire wound was a bloody and mangled mess.

At the local hospital, medics provided urgent care, offering hemostasis to manage the bleeding, blood transfusion and wound dressing, before referring Ms. Chen to Taihe Hospital in Shiyan. By the time of arrival, she was unconscious due to excessive blood loss.

Professor Yao Zhongjun, director of the Department of Hand Surgery, Foot and Ankle, and Microscopic Orthopedics, deemed the damage to the patient’s left upper limb far too severe to be replanted. Although her right hand, which is the dominant hand, was badly injured, the basic structure of the palm maintained intact, offering hope for reconstruction. “We can transplant the left usable fingers to her right hand,” Yao proposed. This “autologous heterotopic finger transplant” departed from conventional approaches, aiming to maintain the right-hand function to the greatest extent.

The race-against-time surgery kicked off at 6:30 a.m. Three medical teams operated simultaneously: one managed the stump of the left arm; another carefully separated the four left fingers for transplantation under a microscope, while a third team prepared the transplant site on  the right hand.

For the most crucial step, vascular anastomosis, doctors used operation sutures as fine as hair under a 20x microscope to reconnect blood vessels and nerves with micron-level precision. Any slight deviation could lead to thrombosis, resulting in the failure of the surgery.

After 14 hours of non-stop efforts, at 8:30 p.m. the 4 transplanted fingers on the right hand gradually turned red with good blood circulation after the tourniquet was released, marking the success of this intricate and challenging surgery.

Reports indicate that such autologous heterotopic transplantation surgery, involving the transplant of amputated digits or fingers from one limb to the other, is extremely rare both domestically and internationally. The successful implementation of this surgery not only maintained the function of the patient's right hand but also pioneered a new viable path for treating severe limb injuries.
