Jimu News (Reporter Zhou Pingying, Intern Zhang Hanwen)On November 14, at an orchid nursery in Zhima Wan Village, Wudian Town, Guangshui City, Hubei, thousands of pots were neatly arranged, with a faint fragrance permeating the air. Xu Haicheng, head of the Guoxiang Lanyi Industrial Park, led us through the rows of greenhouse shelves. With more than 20 years dedicated to the orchid trade – starting with ink orchids in Guangdong – he has since established a large-scale growing facility, trained over 500 apprentices, and gained recognition in orchid circles for developing rare and celebrated cymbidium varieties.

“The odds of this kind of mutation are extremely low – only about one in ten million plants,” Xu Haicheng carefully cupped the leaves of a tiger-spotted Cymbidium orchid, his tone betraying how dearly he treasured it. He explained that this particular orchid was a variety introduced from Anhui in 2014 and has since won three major awards: the Special Gold Award at the Luoyang Orchid Exhibition, the Special Gold Award at the Hunan Changsha International Orchid Expo, and the Gold Award at the Guangdong Wengyuan Orchid Expo. Gently rotating the pot to offer different views, Xu added, “This is the only one of its kind in the entire country. Look at these patterns – they’re impossible to replicate artificially.” According to local residents, the orchid has already received an offer of 600,000 yuan.

Xu Haicheng explained that as one of China's four major national flowers, the core value of orchids lies in their aesthetic appeal. He emphasized that their prices are not standardized but are instead determined through negotiation or auction. "An expert can recognize its unique qualities, while someone less familiar might see it as less thriving than a common orchid," he said, gently running his finger over the yellow patches on a leaf. "This isn't a sign of poor health, but a natural characteristic of the variety. The leaf is thick and resilient to the touch—a defining feature of the tiger spot Cymbidium."

Xu Haicheng's orchid journey began in 1993. "My first encounter was with ink orchids in Guangdong—their broad leaves looked so elegant on the desk that I gradually became fascinated," he recalled."

He explained that entering the orchid industry requires three to five years of specialized learning. Lifting a nearby orchid, he pointed out subtle leaf variations: "You see, this one has scattered spots—the patterns are dispersed. The tiger spot variety we saw earlier has block-shaped patterns. With hundreds of orchid varieties and nearly 200 new additions each year, memorizing each variety's traits is essential." Now operating two orchid bases in Suizhou, Xu currently maintains a total collection of 200,000 plants.

Beyond horticulture, Xu Haicheng has expanded into live streaming, with his largest account boasting over a million followers. Notably, many prominent orchid streamers online originally mentored under his guidance.

When discussing orchid care, Xu Haicheng’s enthusiasm becomes palpable: "Orchids require about 60% humidity and thrive best at temperatures between 16°C to 36°C." He pointed to a custom-made pot with multiple ventilation holes at the bottom. "I designed these breathable pots myself - without proper airflow, the roots turn black and rot." He added that many gardening enthusiasts successfully grow orchids in water vessels outdoors, noting "some can thrive for three months without additional watering."

Speaking of orchid lifespan, Xu Haicheng's voice carried distinct pride: "With proper care, they can live indefinitely. In Korea, women include orchids in their marital dowries. The longest-lasting specimen I've seen has been passed down through three generations."

“Hubei specializes mainly in cymbidium orchids, and Suizhou is recognized as ‘China’s Cymbidium Homeland,’” Xu noted. He warmly invited the visitors to return during blooming season: When the greenhouses become filled with sweet floral scents to experience the true charm of orchids.
