Chutian Metropolitan News (Reporter: Zhang Wanjun; Correspondents: Fang Yingying, Lü Tingyi)Sept. 29- At the Shanyouguo kiwi base in Guaping Village, Xiapu Town, Tongshan County, the harvest hit a historic high: 500,000 kg of premium kiwis, the biggest crop since the orchard’s inception. Chen Zhaolong, the man in charge, could not hide his relief. Behind the bumper yield lie eight years of grit and more than ten million yuan sunk into the hills by him and his son.

At 10 a.m., 800 m above sea level, the plantation on Nanling Hill was shrouded in drifting cloud, a scene straight from a fairy tale. Rows of kiwi vines peeped in and out of the mist; clusters of golden fruit dangled from every trellis, their sweet scent filling the cool mountain air.

Ms. Li from Tongshan County drove to the kiwifruit base with two of her close friends  and walked into the fruit forest carrying baskets. Ms. Li said that she had come to the base to pick kiwis last year and found the fruits tasty. This year, she specially invited her girlfriends to join her. In no time, the three baskets were filled with kiwi. While weighing for Ms. Li, the base staff introduced that “It’s 20 yuan per catty for less than 100 catties (jin, 50 kilograms), and 15 yuan per catty for more than 100 catties.”

In the cold storage of Shanyou Fruit Company in Tongshan County, many workers on the production line are grading and sorting kiwis. Chen Zhaolong told Jimu News reporters that he is a native of Tongshan. Since 1992, he has been engaged in stone processing business in Beijing, Shanghai and other places. In 2018, he returned to start a business, answering the call of his hometown. Considering local climate conditions, he decided to take kiwi fruit farming as his entrepreneurial endeavor. “If we're going to grow kiwi, we’re going to grow top-quality fruit!” Chen Zhaolong leased a thousand acres of land on Nanling Mountain, where he built reservoirs, laid irrigation and fertilization pipelines, and cleared mountain roads. During the past eight years, he has invested more than ten million yuan. Chen and his son also traveled to Shaanxi, Sichuan, and other regions known for advanced kiwi fruit cultivation techniques to gain experience from agricultural specialists. In 2023, their produce obtained the Green Food certification from the China Green Food Development Center, thus hailed as “Gold Berry”.

“My wish is to grow the most delicious kiwi fruit in China,” Chen Zhaolong said with great confidence.
