Renovated heritage building in Wuhan wins Berlin Design Awards

The Panoff Mansion, a century-old heritage building in Wuhan, won the 2023 Berlin Design Awardsfor its renovation and adaptive reuse project.

Located at the Poyang Street, Hankou of Wuhan City, the Panoff Mansion is composed of two adjacent buildings which are both in a mixed structure of brick and wood. Russian tea merchant brothers J.K. Banov and Chino Banov built it together in 1910. With a total of five storeys, it was the largest apartment building in Hankou at that time and is now recognized as a microcosm of the China-Russia Ten-thousand-mile Tea Road, and trade and cultural exchanges between East and West.

In 2018, the company CITIC Designstarted to be responsible for the buildings renovation and design. After completion, the Panoff Mansion, featuring Wuhans local characteristics and courtyard, canserve as an exhibitionarea, a public leisure space and a hotelat the same time.

As one of the most prestigious international design awards, the Berlin Design Awards aims to identify and honor visionary designers and their works under architecture, interior design, graphic designand other categories. (en.hubei.gov.cn by Ruan Xinqi)
